Summary: Collection consists of the papers and research materials of J.K. Shishkin (1839-1974). Papers (series I, II, and VIII) consist of Shishkin's reports, manuscripts, clippings, periodicals, School of American Research annual reports, and Museum of New Mexico newsletters (1960-1973). Manuscripts pertain to the Palace of the Governors, the Museum of Fine Arts, and New Mexico's interim governor W.F.M. Arny. Miscellaneous periodicals and clippings pertain to tourism and other related subjects. Subjects discussed in reports are Pueblo Indians, New Mexico history, tourism, archaeological sites, missions, and other related subjects. The bulk of the collection consists of Shishkin's research materials (series III-VII). Included are photocopies of New Mexico historical documents from various repositories (1839-1837) and newspaper excerpts (1847-1888). Photocopies are from the Archivo General de la Nacion and the National Archives and are of the records or correspondence of Manuel Alvarez, Donaciano Vigil, and various U.S. agencies during the 19th century. Subjects discussed are military bases, the Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe, and other related subjects. Also included are select typescript translations from the Spanish Archives of New Mexico I and II.
